INFORMATION RE: AIR QUALITY AT THE SCHOOL
I have spent the past 2 hours at the school, and this is what I can report at this time.
The air ducts were being cleaned last night. Human error caused the debris and dust from the ducts to be circulated to 4 classrooms – both JK/SK rooms on the main floor, as well as the 2 JK/SK rooms in the basement. While there have been many concerns about the air quality of the school since the renovations from the sumer have progressed this fall, the current situation is NOT related to the construction. No other classes were deemed at risk due to this error.
Principal Delorme closed all four classrooms immediately this morning, not allowing students access. The students have been enjoying time in the gym as well as outside.
While I was there, Superintendent Susan MacDonald, Principal Delorme, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Labour, the contractors responsible for the cleaning and the renovations were reviewing the rooms.
It was agreed that those classrooms would be closed until professional cleaners were brought in to clean the mess. This would include anything that was in the room – from toys, to books, curtains and dress up clothes. Superintendent MacDonald was adamant that the cleaning would be undertaken as soon as possible.
The school is open, and other classes are running as scheduled. JK & SK students will be in the gym until their classrooms are cleaned.
**Air quality – there was testing planned for Monday by independent assessors and will go ahead as indicated. School Council will be asking that written reports be provided as they are available to ensure the safety of all students.
